Choose Your Track

Exploratory Track

You want to build your skills and do exploratory work in arts classes across departments before deciding on a major. After a minimum of one semester and a maximum of one year, you will choose whether to enter the InterArts Advanced Track or select a different arts major.

Required Courses:

Advanced Track

You want to experiment, stretch boundaries, and move fluidly between different arts disciplines, working both collaboratively and independently. To build your curriculum, you will choose a pathway: Design, Storytelling, Digital Communication, or Performance.

Required Courses

Choose a Pathway

Students may apply to switch their Arts Majors at any time. With the acceptance of the relevant Arts Chair, arts major switches usually occur with effect from the beginning of the next full semester following request and application.

InterArtists choose one of two tracks depending on their focus and interests.

Courses

Interdisciplinary Explorations

Exploratory and Advanced
Masterclasses with interdisciplinary artists
Field trips to galleries, museums or theatres
Preparation for whole-department events and shows, devised, produced and executed by the InterArts department. One event per semester.

Independent Study

Advanced
Students meet weekly with a dedicated mentor to develop their own art project which will feature in an end of year show.

Interdisciplinary Mind

Advanced
Students study interdisciplinary artists and art movements. Students study topics such as how technology intersects with art or the synergy between art and social justice, in order to further enrich their own artistic process. Students will generate individual and collaborative projects, acquire language around critique, learn to write effective artist statements, and build their portfolios.

Pathways

Design

There are many Design opportunities at Idyllwild Arts Academy and Design focus students may choose from Design classes in InterArts, Theatre, Film and Visual Art. InterArts Design students will also work closely with the Creative Technology Lab where they have access to a laser cutter and a 3D printer, and where many design projects are born.

Storytelling

Myth, memoir, documentary, drama, webseries, graphic novel: Storytelling in the InterArts Department can take many shapes. Whether your stories are written, filmed, performed or painted; whether they are fictional or non-fictional, we work closely with Creative Writing, Film, Visual Arts, and Theatre to provide an interdisciplinary focus to storytelling. One of the strongest human impulses is to create narrative, and in the InterArts department we examine the possibilities for storytelling from many angles.

Performance Practice

Coming into Idyllwild Arts Academy, most students already have a good idea whether or not they love to express themselves through performance. InterArts Performance Practice builds traditional skills in Theatre, Film, Music, Dance, Visual Art and Creative Writing, with the aim of bringing these skills back to the InterArts space where any form of performance is possible. InterArts Performance Practice focuses on interdisciplinary, collaborative, original, devised performances with a theme or message. Students are expected to contribute to the performance with their personal passions, and to work collaboratively to make performance art. The InterArts Performance group presents its show towards the end of the academic year.

Digital Communication

Students who identify with a Digital Communication pathway within InterArts can explore, among other areas, Digital Photography, Computer Graphics, Creative Technologies, and Documentary Film Making. A focus on Digital Communication offers to students a unique opportunity to engage with communities beyond Idyllwild Arts Academy and link their work to the outside world. Like all InterArtists, students who focus on a Digital Communication pathway will produce an original and innovative Senior show.

Faculty

A firm commitment to multidisciplinary creation means that the InterArts Department draws on the remarkable talents of other Academy arts faculties. The InterArts Department’s core teachers are also highly accomplished in their own right, having exhibited at the Getty Center and in galleries in Düsseldorf and Belgrade, had theatrical work performed at the Kennedy Center, designed for Friends costumer Debra McGuire, and designed costumes for Santa Fe Opera, the Tulsa Ballet Theatre, and the Pasadena Shakespeare Company.
