Alternative Clasps & Closures

This 5-day workshop will begin with a short introduction to many different kinds of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. Content will include clasp inspirations, and those ideas originating from non-jewelry sources to inspire creative thinking about clasps. We will then create the following six clasp samples in sterling silver: two versions of a rotating insert clasp; a basic, and a more complex version of that clasp; a rotating key lock clasp, an interlocking puzzle clasp; a wedge lock clasp and, if time allows, a side-box clasp. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways– and in innumerable variations–into necklace and bracelet closures as an integral design element of any jewelry piece. Clasps do not have to be just an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing, and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle!

Suzanne Williams hails from Colorado and is a graduate of Colorado State University with a BFA in printmaking. Sheworked as a graphic artist, illustrator, fine artist, and technician in art/bronze casting foundries before launching her jewelry-making career in the early 90’s. Over the past 32 years, Suzanne has shown her signature 3-dimensional work in many galleries, art festivals and group shows, and has more recently been teaching workshops, particularly with a focus on designing and creating novel and unconventional clasps and closures.
