Our Ornamented Guardian
Explore the rich possibilities of creating your personal guardian. What kind of guardian? Think, Year of the Rabbit, mythical protector, terracotta warrior or any other full bodied creature that your heart desires. Working from photographs or drawings, we will use basic slab and modeling techniques to make and assemble a guardian 12-18”in height. Each participant’s project will be unique, so we will discuss individual plans to make construction easier. George will demonstrate continuous hollow construction as well as how to build in sections for smaller kilns or larger sculptures. Concurrently, we will make one-part plaster press molds to embellish our sculptures and bring texture to the surface.
George Rodriguez creates highly ornamented, figurative ceramic sculptures. Born and raised in the border city of El Paso, TX, Rodriguez holds a BFA from the University of Texas at El Paso and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Washington. His sculptures are part of the collections of the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, IL), the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC) and the Nationalmuseum (Stockhold, Sweden), among others. George was a proud demonstration artist at the 2022 National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Each week begins on Sunday at 9 a.m. and ends Saturday morning after the kilns are unloaded.

Lab Fee: $85, includes clay, firing, and shared supplies; you will be asked to bring additional materials.
